Taxonomic databases

Cichorieae Portal is a web portal developed by the International Cichorieae Network (ICN), including data on over 150 Lactuca species. Covered subjects include a general species description, synonymy information, images, specimens and distributional and ecological data.

Euro + Med PlantBase integrates and critically evaluates information from Flora Europaea, Med-Checklist, the Flora of Macaronesia, and from regional and national floras and checklists from the area as well as additional taxonomic and floristic literature.

GRIN Taxonomy for Plants is a taxonomic information platform provided by the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Choose 'Browse' and enter "Lactuca" as search criterion for 'Genus' which will then list over 100 species names for which data on taxonomy, synonymy, economic importance and distributional range are presented. Additionally, it is indicated whether specimens are included in the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS), while also literature references and links to images and other web resources are given.

International Plant Name Index (IPNI) is a database developed through collaboration between the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, the Harvard University Herbaria and the Australian National Herbarium. Choose 'Advanced Search' next to the search box on the main menu and enter "Lactuca" under 'Genus' to reveal over 700 records with plant names, including species and lower taxonomic levels. Data are provided about plant names and their literature source, synonyms and basionyms, while also concise distributional information is given.

Mansfeld's World Database of Agriculture and Horticultural Crops is an online crop plant species database developed at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK). Click on the magnifying glass symbol in the menu on the left and enter "Lactuca" in the search box to find over 80 plant names with information about nomenclature and synonymy, common names in different languages, spontaneous distribution, regions of cultivation and uses. In addition, images, references, ancestral species, and notes on the phylogeny, variation and history are provided.

NCBI Taxonomy Browser hosts curated classification and nomenclature for organisms that have molecular data in the databases of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Entering Lactuca in the 'Search for' box presents over 90 records with information about plant names, synonymy and phylogenetic lineages, while access is provided to available data on genes, proteins and sequences.

The Plant List is a working list of all known plant species. It aims to be comprehensive for species of Vascular plant (flowering plants, conifers, ferns and their allies) and of Bryophytes (mosses and liverworts). The Plant List has not been updated since 2013 and has been replaced by the World of Flora Online (WFO) Plant List.

Tropicos is a botanical information system of the Missouri Botanical Garden. Entering "Lactuca" in the 'Quick Name Search' box lists over 400 records with information on plant names, synonymy, specimens, chromosome number, distribution and use. In addition, images and literature references are provided.
